Health Behavior and Education Department
(HBED)
Welcome to the Department of Health Behavior and Education.
The mission of the department is to develop a better understanding
of both the effects of individual and social factors on health,
with the intention of facilitating change of behavior, and of
the wider social conditions that have adverse health effects.
Our multidisciplinary faculty achieves this by conducting research
that responds to the health needs of the area, informing national
policy, contributing to related issues, and by providing local
and regional services. These activities inform educational programs
that are geared toward preparing practitioners to identify and
analyze major health determinants as well as to design, implement
and evaluate interventions and policies aimed at improving health.
The Department faculty place strong emphasis on involving students
in real life experiences throughout their studies.

Degrees and Programs
Master of Public Health
The focus of this department is on graduate level programs.
A Master
of Public Health (MPH) in Health Behavior and Education
is offered. The department also offers undergraduate level courses
as electives.
Departmental courses are designed to introduce students to the
field of health behavior and education, which is concerned with
facilitating the process of behavioral change from actions that
are not conducive to health to those that are more favorable
to health. The role of health educators as agents of change
is emphasized, in addition to the importance of the participation
of the target group in the assessment, implementation, and evaluation
of interventions that lead to health promotion. Ethical issues
in health behavior and education are also emphasized in all
courses. |
