About the Chapter
The Faculty of Health Science Chapter (The Chapter) of the Alumni
Association at the American University of Beirut was first established
in year 1994. The Chapter has witnessed three executive committees;
all of which have focused on drawing partnerships primarily
with the Faculty of Health Sciences (The Faculty) at the American
University of Beirut (The University) as well as other community
stakeholders in the field of health sciences. The Executive
Committees were active within the Alumni Association and conducted
a myriad of awareness initiatives aiming at promoting Health
Sciences among the community at large.
Mission
The Chapter aspires to be a nationally recognized health sciences
academic-based-professional-body that drives strength from the
Alma Mater of the University and its diversity with a long term
dedication to the understanding and discovery of health sciences
in all its sub-disciplines and enhancing them all through advocacy
and constructive promotion.
Vision
Understanding that some sub-disciplines of health sciences are
concerned with the "impact of environment on humans"
and others with "impact of humans on environment";
Considering that man is an integral part of the physical and
non-physical environment and by no means its manager;
Admitting that the environment "the world around us"
is too complex in its make up for humans to manage it;
Acknowledging that access to sound Public Health and Environmental
Health care and services is integral to the pillars of human
rights; and
Since sub-disciplines of Health Sciences are complementary in
nature,
Therefore quality of life is critically dependent on humans
carefully understanding and managing the sub-disciplines
of health sciences, their enhancement and continual long-term
growth as well as promotion among all members of communities.
The Chapter should endeavour to influence the direction of Health
Sciences management in Lebanon and the Middle East region by
introducing positive change through conviction, convincing and
conflict resolution through focused advocacy, sound policy making,
and elaborating an ethical code of practice
Our motto is:
It is not about "quality" it is about "the
quality of life"
"Long-term" is the way forward
Policy
Health sciences sub-disciplines will be advocated for and promoted
by the Chapter through the introduction of positive change and
by abiding to the following policy pillars:
Adhering to the constitution and bylaws of the Alumni Association
and playing a proactive role in its development and promotion.
Empowering the community to take part in decisions - a basic
right - that affect its spiritual, psychological, physical and
social well-being as well as its belongings.
Working towards forming an informed faculty-graduate that is
committed, involved, interested, rational and thoughtful.
Willing to be accountable for one's actions and fidelity to
the obligations, which accompany one's accepted roles.
Advocating equity and compassion in decisions made about organising,
financing, and delivering Public Health and Environmental Health
services to the people, individually and collectively.
Recognising the importance of ethical practices in health sciences.
Committing to excellence in advocacy, community service, policy
making and entrepreneurial growth in the sectors.
Pronouncing objectives that are clear, transparent, and explicit,
while addressing the level of trust, credibility, voluntarism,
fairness, compassion, and perseverance in all our doings.
Objectives
To bind together all graduates and former students of the faculty
for mutual, social, professional, and intellectual benefits.
To advance the interests and promote the welfare of its members,
through the creation of an ethical and equal opportunity climate
consistent with the Chapter's Policy.
To perpetuate the ideals and fair name of the University and
the faculty.
To work in close cooperation with the faculty to help the mission
of both parties.
To plan, develop, encourage and evaluate exchange of technical
expertise in the field of health sciences for better appreciation
of the complex world around us.
To develop and maintain a series of sustainable cooperation
with local, regional and international health, environmental
and development organizations with a commitment to shared values
and purposes.
To place community service as primary concern in the Chapter's
strategic approach, programs, projects and activities.
Strategic Approach
Recognizing and assessing public health and environmental health
issues through scientific methods and the recognition of public
sentiment; without making assumptions, while addressing major
community concerns.
Seeking leadership through integration with the university and
national community by using an inter-disciplinary approach to
Health Sciences.
Allowing all faculty graduates to be involved early on in the
decision making process through the facilitation of their early
engagement in professional practice.
Concentrating on the art of listening to our partners. Coordinating
and collaborating with credible sources; while devoting time,
effort and resources to the slow and hard work of establishing
communication channels, which will pay off on the long-term.
Developing a mutually beneficial relationship with the media,
towards elaborating a mass communication strategy.
Carrying out a balanced programme of effective advocacy, community
service and support to sound policy making in the arena of Health
Sciences.
Focusing particularly on establishing good working relationships
with concerned public agencies in the country and harmonising
actions and interventions that are synergistic with their policies,
strategies and actions plans.
Adopting methods of careful planning, and performance evaluation
as effective tools integral to progress.
