The Graduate Public Health Program
Master of Science Epidemiology, (MS
EPID)
The mission of the Master of Science in Epidemiology program
is to provide training in epidemiological principles and
methods for understanding etiology and patterns of disease
and for the assessment, monitoring and investigation of
health problems in a community or clinical setting.
Program Description
The MS program provides in-depth training in research
methods and research experience (thesis). The program offers
basic training in the methods of design, conduct and
analysis for various types of studies including sample
surveys, longitudinal, case-control and clinical studies.
The program offers students the opportunity to research
medical and health problems in their clinical and community
contexts through the master's thesis requirement, and also
in course related projects. Important aspects of the program
are training in independent research, through the thesis
requirement, and involvement in collaborative research
projects undertaken by Faculty to gain practical, hands-on
research experience.
The program addresses the growing demand for research
oriented professionals in Lebanon and the Region by
preparing students to assume positions in governmental,
non-governmental and international organizations; as well as
hospitals, clinical and public health research-based
institutions, and pharmaceutical companies.
Curriculum
The Department offers a two-year program of full-time study.
Students are required to take eight mandatory core courses,
and one to two optional elective courses. Students must as
well prepare and satisfactorily defend a thesis. Core
courses focus on basic epidemiologic and biostatistical
methods and provide an overview of the health and health
service context in which these methods are used. Elective
courses enable students to select topics of particular
interest that may be beneficial to conduct a particular
thesis.
Credit Requirements
The MS in Epidemiology program comprises three components
totaling 30 credits.
The curriculum in the thesis track consists of 30 credit hours
including:
Required courses: 21 credits
Elective courses: 3 credits
Thesis: 6 credits
