Huda Zurayk receives the Shousha Prize for significant contribution to public health
Following the recommendations of the Dr. A.T. Shousha Foundation Committee the Executive Board of the WHO awarded the Dr. A.T. Shousha Foundation Prize for 2009 to Professor Huda Zurayk for her significant contribution to public health at country and regional level, as well as her remarkable and significant contribution to the success of the Geiza Reproductive Health Project in Egypt, in the geographical area in which Dr. Shousha served the World Health Organization (WHO).
The award was presented at the 56th Session of the Regional Committee in Fez, Morocco by the Director of the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office (EMRO) of the WHO, Dr. Hussein A. Gezairy, on October 5, 2009. Ministers of health, country delegates, representatives of professional associations as well as the Director General of the WHO, Dr. Margaret Chan, and EMRO staff were present.
Huda Zurayk also presented in a plenary session of the 26th
General Conference of the International Union for the
Scientific Study of Populations held in Marrakesh from
September 22-October 2, 2009. The session was on the key
population challenges facing Arab societies in the 21st
century. Dr. Zurayk spoke on the challenge of expanding and
improving graduate education in population sciences and
public health in the region.
